What is SOLAR?
Campus Life and Student Government have collaborated in combining the former events of SOLAR and SURGE. Last summer, Campus Life put on SOLAR (Student Organization Learning and Resources) to educate organizations about University policies and procedures regarding organizations and to supply them with the learning tools they need to have a successful academic year. Student Government hosted SURGE, an event which focused on collaboration and networking with other organizations, as well as information on various topics to make organizations more effective.
When we tried coming up with a new name, SOLURGE and SURGELAR sounded just plain silly. SOLAR was the name that we decided to stick with because we felt that this event should focus on Student Organization Learning And Resources, and the outcomes of the former events can be incorporated into this title. This newly merged SOLAR will consist of Summer SOLAR, Winter SOLAR, and multiple SOLAR Seminars throughout the academic year.
SOLAR Seminars
Who Should Go?
Summer SOLAR is going to provide a variety of topics including networking and collaboration that both regular members can utilize as well as position holders and officers. Basically, anyone who is a member of a recognized student organization here at Eastern can attend. Because of the structure, a single member will not be able to attend all of the break-out sessions so it is encouraged that more than one member attend per organization. Members will also learn about important upcoming dates for the fall semester such as Fajita Fest and Homecoming.

*Note: Attend sessions based on the position you hold or will potentially hold. Presidents should attend sessions based upon what areas your organization could use improvement.
Advertising & Promotion
- This session will give members the resources to make their organization and events more well-known throughout campus.
- Marketing chairs and Public Relations chairs should attend
All Things Money!
- Organization members will learn about creating a budget, fundraising opportunities, organization x-fund accounts, and funding opportunities
- Treasurers and Fundraising chairs should attend
Event Planning
- Here you can find out how to plan successful events and what all goes into putting on an event, how to use the Risk Matrix, as well as how to request for room reservations through multi-date forms
- Programming chairs, Presidents, and anyone who plans on hosting an event should attend
Leadership & Management Styles
- Learn what type of leadership/management style you have, the benefits and drawbacks of that style, and how to work with people with styles different from your own.
- Presidents and anyone potentially seeking leadership positions should attend
Membership & Recruitment
- In this session, you will learn the “secrets” to retention, membership engagement, and how to recruit new members that will add quality to your organization.
- Membership chairs and Recruitment chairs should attend
Service & Philanthropy
- Learn what the difference is between community service and philanthropy, opportunities in the Ypsilanti area, how service can help you organization, and the importance of reflection.
- Philanthropy chairs should attend
